Here's another fun applet that we developed along with the smart folks at NCTM for the Illuminations website. This ten-frame applet helps your Pre-K to Second grade students have fun while developing basic number facts, including counting and addition skills.
Students can choose one of four game modes or click Play all for a randomized selection.
How to play
Students can select a play piece from the menu in the upper-left hand corner. Pieces include circles, ladybugs, stars or apples. Then they can choose one of the following games:
- How Many: Identify how many items or empty squares there are.
- Build: Drag a certain number of items to the frame.
- Fill: Determine how many items are needed to fill the remaining squares.
- Add: Drag items to complete addition problems.
Students can use the keyboard or the onscreen number buttons to enter their answers. Clicking on the DONE button will submit your answer and clicking on NEXT will move you on to the next problem.
Whole Class Instruction
Put the ten-frame tool up on your interactive whiteboard and let your students practice their basic number facts.
